Buying a used car in Saudi Arabia

Used cars are among the most traded classified items — and the ones that most reward careful checking. The difference between a good deal and an expensive one usually comes down to a single hour of inspection.

Before you view the car

Ask about the model year, current mileage, whether it was dealer-imported, and any accident or repaint history. Request clear photos of the odometer and cabin. Contradictory answers at this stage save you an entire trip.

Technical inspection

Do not rely on a quick look. An inspection at an accredited centre is the best money you will spend, because it reveals what a short test drive cannot.

• Check for paint shade differences between panels and around door edges.
• Look for uneven tyre wear — a sign of alignment or suspension problems.
• Test drive on a highway, not only inside the neighbourhood.
• Watch exhaust colour and listen for unusual sounds under acceleration.
• Verify the air conditioning cools properly — essential in the Saudi climate.

Paperwork and ownership transfer

Confirm the seller's name matches the registration (istimara) owner, and that the car is free of traffic fines, liens, or holds. Transfer is completed electronically through the approved government platforms and requires valid periodic inspection and insurance.

Do not pay in full before the transfer actually completes. The safe, standard approach is to complete transfer and payment in the same session.

Negotiating

Negotiate from evidence, not hope: the inspection report and prices of comparable cars of the same year and mileage in your region. Offer a specific, justified number rather than asking for an open-ended discount.
