Responsible pet ownership

Getting a pet is a lovely decision but a responsibility that stretches over years. A considered choice before acquiring saves you and the animal many problems later.

Before acquiring

• Ask about age, health status, and vaccination records.
• See the animal in person and observe its activity and health.
• Ask the reason for selling and the animal's behaviour around people.
• Take it to a vet after collection.

Count the true cost

The purchase price is a small part of the cost. Factor in proper food, routine vaccinations, treatment when needed, and supplies. Acquire what you can genuinely care for, not what tempts you in the moment.

Care and regulations

Provide a suitable environment (space, ventilation, cleanliness), healthy food, and regular vet visits. Also comply with the rules for transporting and selling certain species, and avoid banned ones.

Responsible ownership

Deal with a seller who cares about their animals' health, and don't reward those who neglect them. A thought-through decision always beats a rushed emotional purchase that often ends in the animal being given up.
