Moving furniture safely and cheaply

Last updated: 2026-08-03

Most furniture damage happens during the move, not in use. A little preparation protects your pieces and saves repair or replacement costs.

Before moving day

  • Dismantle large pieces (beds, tables) to ease transport and reduce breakage.
  • Wrap corners and glass surfaces in protective material.
  • Measure doorways and lifts to confirm pieces will pass.
  • Keep screws and small parts in labelled bags.

Choose a moving method

For a few pieces, a small pickup with a helper may be enough. For a full move, a furniture-moving company provides labour, packing, and insurance on the items — compare several quotes and check reviews.

During the move

Lift heavy pieces correctly (from the knees, not the back), and secure furniture in the vehicle so it can't shift. Distribute weight evenly, and never stack fragile pieces under heavy ones.
