How to make sure a phone isn't stolen

Buying a stolen or locked phone means losing your money on something unusable — and can expose you to liability. A few simple steps protect you fully.

Check the IMEI

Dial *#06# to show the IMEI, and compare it with the number printed on the box and in the settings. A mismatch is a red flag. Keep the number as proof of the device you bought.

Verify lock accounts

On iPhone, iCloud must be signed out (Activation Lock); on Android, the Google account (FRP lock). A device still tied to the seller's account will lock after a reset and be unusable.

Factory reset in front of you

Ask for a factory reset while you're there, and confirm the device works afterwards without asking for a previous account. This is the clearest way to be sure it's free of any lock.

Warning signs

• A seller who refuses to sign out or reset in front of you.
• A price far below market with no clear reason.
• No box or proof of purchase, and pressure to close quickly.
