Transferring car ownership in Saudi Arabia
Last updated: 2026-08-03
Ownership transfer is the step that seals the deal. Doing it correctly protects both sides from liability for any fines or accidents after the sale.
Conditions before transfer
- Valid periodic inspection for the car.
- Active insurance in the buyer's name.
- The car free of traffic fines and liens.
- The seller's name matching the registration owner.
Documents needed
The registration (istimara), the national ID of both buyer and seller, and proof of the new insurance. It's all done electronically through the approved government platforms, usually with no visit to the traffic department.
The transfer steps
The seller starts the transfer request electronically and selects the buyer; the buyer confirms and issues insurance in their name; the fees are paid, and a new registration is issued in the new owner's name.
Paying safely
The safe, standard way is to complete the transfer and payment in the same session. Confirm the money has actually landed in your account via your banking app before handing over the keys — never rely on a transfer screenshot.
