Buying a used MacBook

A MacBook holds value better than most laptops, so a used one is a good deal if you check the right things, some of which are Mac-specific.

Intel or Apple Silicon?

The most important decision. Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3 chips) is far faster, cooler, and longer on battery, with longer software support. Avoid older Intel models where possible, they're closest to end of support. Check the chip in 'About This Mac'.

Battery cycles

Open About This Mac → System Report → Power, and check 'Cycle Count'. A battery past ~800 cycles may need replacing soon, and Mac battery replacement is costly, factor it into the price.

Activation Lock (Find My)

Make sure the seller signed out of iCloud, turned off 'Find My', and reset the Mac in front of you. A Mac tied to a previous account can stay locked and unusable.

Physical inspection

• The screen on white then black to reveal stains and lines.
• The keyboard, all keys, and the trackpad.
• Ports, speakers, camera, and mic.
• The chassis for bends or drop marks.
