Buying a used MacBook

A MacBook holds value better than most laptops, so a used one is a good deal if you check the right things — some of which are Mac-specific.

Intel or Apple Silicon?

The most important decision. Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3 chips) is far faster, cooler, and longer on battery, with longer software support. Avoid older Intel models where possible — they're closest to end of support. Check the chip in 'About This Mac'.

Battery cycles

Open About This Mac → System Report → Power, and check 'Cycle Count'. A battery past ~800 cycles may need replacing soon, and Mac battery replacement is costly — factor it into the price.

Activation Lock (Find My)

Make sure the seller signed out of iCloud, turned off 'Find My', and reset the Mac in front of you. A Mac tied to a previous account can stay locked and unusable.

Physical inspection

• The screen on white then black to reveal stains and lines.
• The keyboard, all keys, and the trackpad.
• Ports, speakers, camera, and mic.
• The chassis for bends or drop marks.
