Buying used furniture

Good furniture loses much of its price the moment it leaves the store, while keeping its quality. That makes used furniture one of the best deals — if you choose carefully.

Measure before you buy

Ask for exact dimensions (L × W × H) before travelling to view it, and measure the spot, doorways, and lift. Many large pieces won't fit through narrow doors.

Check durability

• Solid wood is far sturdier than particle board (MDF), which fails with humidity.
• Test drawers, hinges, and legs — wobble signals weakness.
• Inspect leather or fabric for scratches, stains, and odours.
• For mattresses and sofas: ask about age and interior cleanliness.

Moving and the deal

Agree upfront who covers transport (usually the buyer), and confirm the piece can be dismantled and moved safely. Inspect it in person before paying — don't rely on photos alone.
