Buying a used PlayStation or Xbox

A used console is an excellent deal if you test it well, especially newer generations that hold value. Trying it before handover protects you from a costly fault.

Checks when viewing

• Power it on and confirm a fast boot and display over HDMI.
• Fully test controllers: buttons, sticks, vibration, and charging.
• Run a game for a while and watch the temperature and fan noise.
• Check the disc drive if the edition has one.

Accounts and reset

Ask the seller to sign out and factory-reset the console in front of you. A device tied to a previous account may block you from downloading your games or lock some features.

Value and accessories

Compare offers by the original games and extra controllers they include — a fuller bundle is often better value than the cheapest. Ask how long it was used and about any past repair.
