Buying used home appliances

Used appliances save a lot, but a hidden fault can cost more than the price difference. The golden rule: never buy one without running and testing it in front of you.

Run and fully test it

• Fridge: confirm cooling and freezing, and no leaks or loud noise.
• Washer: run a short cycle and check filling, spinning, and draining.
• AC: test cooling efficiency and how fast it cools, and inspect the filter.
• Ovens and microwaves: confirm even heating and sound doors.

Ask about age and warranty

The purchase year tells you the remaining lifespan, and a live warranty adds real value. Ask for the purchase invoice if any, and about past repairs or replaced parts.

Factor in running cost

Older units can draw more electricity. A cheaper but power-hungry appliance may cost more over time. Weigh price against efficiency before deciding.
