Buying used AirPods and spotting fakes

AirPods are among the most counterfeited products, and modern fakes now look very convincing. So verifying authenticity is the most important step when buying used.

Check the serial number

Ask for the serial number (printed on the case and inside its lid, and shown in iPhone settings when paired), and enter it on Apple's 'Check Coverage' page. An unrecognised or reused number signals a fake.

Signs of a fake

• Pairing: genuine ones show an instant animation when the case opens near an iPhone.
• Weight and material: fakes are often lighter or feel different.
• Sound quality and noise cancelling are clearly weaker on fakes.
• Printing and font on the case and units are imprecise on fakes.

Battery health

AirPods batteries weaken with use and can't be easily replaced. Ask about age and test them: run-time on a full charge is the best indicator of their condition.

Accessories and pairing

Make sure the original case is included (it's part of the product and charges the buds), and test pairing both buds together and each individually before buying.
